Kain & Ball was founded by Anita T. Kain and David R. Ball, two veteran Bay Street lawyers with the shared vision of providing the very best legal advice and representation to family law clients. Kain & Ball opened its doors in 1993 with this mandate, and has continued to grow over the years. In the transformations and expansions that our firm has undergone in the years that have passed, one thing remains constant and always will: our commitment to our clients.
Specialized and experienced family and divorce law firm.
David Ball In Memoriam
David R. Ball: 1957-1999
Colleague. Friend. Brilliant Lawyer.
David Ball cofounded Kain & Ball with Anita Kain in 1993. As two experienced Bay Street litigators and best friends, David and Anita set out to provide unsurpassed legal representation to Family Law clients while creating a law firm culture that was truly unique and reflective of their values. David’s discerning legal mind, razor sharp wit, and fearless approach to advocacy imbued his practice and made him well liked and respected by both clients and colleagues. David tragically lost his battle with cancer in 1999, only 6 years after co-founding Kain & Ball; his inspiring pursuit of excellence in the field of family law lives on in the culture of the firm that continues to bear his name. A skilled advocate and brilliant lawyer, David is sorely missed by his colleagues. Kain & Ball would not be what it is today had David not been a part of it. What began as the shared vision of providing excellent legal services to family law clients has now become a reality, and we are often reminded of David and how he enriched the lives of those who had the privilege to call him a friend and colleague.

This makes us better and more efficient, to ensure that you are getting optimal legal services.
Say hello to your potential team, each a master of their respective craft.
With an impressive range and depth of experience in the field, Anita is an esteemed and accomplished lawyer with expertise in all areas of family law, including negotiating and litigating complex financial matters, custody and access issues, and child and spousal support issues. Prior to co-founding Kain & Ball in 1993, Anita obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from King’s University College at the University of Western Ontario and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1983. She was then called to the Ontario Bar in 1985, articled with a large Bay Street law firm in Toronto, and has practiced since that time exclusively in the area of family law.
Having the courage to leave her successful practice at a large, well established firm to start Kain & Ball, and to rebuild and grow the firm after the loss of its cofounder and her dear friend is illustrative of Anita’s general approach to both law and to life. She has always taken on challenges with fearlessness, perseverance, and enthusiasm; and it is this approach that she has imbued in the culture of the firm she has built.
A skilled negotiator and captivating advocate, Anita owns her clients’ problems and takes them on with the confidence of a seasoned professional who consistently delivers excellent results. She truly engenders the belief that her clients’ successes are deeply important to her because they are. Anita’s passion for family law extends beyond what she does; she is committed to helping people and their families navigate the legal system. She has helped numerous clients reach optimal settlements and successfully argued numerous motions, trials, and appeals on behalf of her clients on all family law issues. Her advocacy experience extends to all levels of the courts, including the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to being an authority on the technical aspects of family law, Anita is also a true presence in the courtroom; delivering hard-hitting arguments with the skillful ease that only a veteran expert can. While her mastery of family law litigation is comprehensive and formidable, Anita is a brilliant negotiator and creative problem solver. Where possible, Anita will do her utmost to assist her clients in achieving resolutions to their family law problems out of court. She has extensive experience in negotiating all kinds of domestic contracts and dealing with family law matters by way of alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration. During her more than 30 years of practice, Anita has successfully represented innumerable clients in negotiations, mediations, and arbitrations.
In addition to her role as an advocate Ms. Kain is also a certified mediator, who has assisted parties in reaching fair and reasonable settlements in an amicable and cost-effective manner. Anita’s wisdom in family law (and in life) in combination with her willingness to work tirelessly until a resolution is achieved and her open, direct, and friendly demeanour position her well to aide parties in overcoming their differences and finding creative and mutually beneficial solutions to even the most complicated and contentious family law problems.
As a senior lawyer, Anita is an excellent mentor; sharing her knowledge with less experienced lawyers and assisting them with finding ways to improve their mastery of the practice of family law. Within the firm, Anita acts as senior counsel on many of the files run by more junior lawyers, and her door is always open to offer insight and advice to other members of the firm. On a larger scale, she has also been an educator and published materials for continuing education programs. Anita has made an effort to give back to the community by creating a firm culture that prioritizes corporate social responsibility and has started many initiatives on behalf of the firm to make positive contributions locally and across the province. Remembering her roots, and feeling that it is important to recognize and encourage academic achievement Anita has also contributed to her Alma Mater by creating the Anita T. Kain Award in Modern Languages.
An engaging and vibrant speaker, Anita has also been a valuable resource to professionals in various fields, regularly giving presentations about family law at several different meetings, conferences, and summits. Her dynamic energy and willingness to share her wealth of expert knowledge make her presentations both interesting and informative. If you are interested in having Anita speak at an event, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Anita T. Kain is a well-known and respected expert of the Family Law Bar in Ontario, having practiced exclusively in the area of family law for over 30 years. Along with her unquestioned experience, Ms. Kain brings a tenacity and fortitude to her practice that also exemplifies her approach to life more broadly. She is as much the vivacious powerhouse outside of the courtroom and the boardroom as she is inside them. Anita can often be found engaged in high intensity fitness pursuits such as kickboxing, cycling and many other physically and mentally challenging activities. The passion for challenge and the intense energy she brings to these activities are qualities that have served Anita very well throughout her distinguished career.
Lauren’s ability to marry a modern mastery of the technical aspects of family law with an unwavering personal commitment to the individual needs of her clients differentiate her from other lawyers and reflect her unique background. Lauren grew up with Kain and Ball as the core of her family. Her upbringing largely took place within the walls of the firm and her approach to her clients reflects the culture that led to its founding: an independence from outside influences, a passion for understanding the real needs of clients and a focus on and empathy for their individual circumstances. The lessons she learned watching the firm’s founders, her mother Anita Kain and her godfather David Ball, build a practice focussed exclusively on passionate advocacy on behalf of their clients are central to who she is as both a person and a lawyer. Lauren’s goal has always been to build on that culture and to add to it an extensive and in-depth knowledge of modern family law. The pursuit of this goal is her passion and the driving force behind her dynamic energy.
The world has changed significantly since the firm’s founding and Lauren brings a deep understanding of current law and context to her practice. She has successfully represented clients before the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice numerous times and has appeared before and prepared written materials for all levels of court in Ontario including the Court of Appeal as well as having prepared materials for the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Lauren has also effectively represented clients in various forms of alternative dispute resolution processes including negotiations, mediations, and arbitrations. Her success in representing her clients in a variety of circumstances, and in respect of all family law issues ranging from complicated financial matters to high conflict parenting cases, reflects her ability to stay true to the firm’s core values in a complex world. As an experienced advocate for her clients Lauren brings a combination of technical expertise, mastery of the legal process and the culture our firm embodies to meet their individual needs.
Lauren’s moxie when combined with her methodical approach, deliberate preparation, assiduous attention to detail, and dogged determination make her exactly the kind of lawyer that you want on your side. Since her call to the Bar in 2012 Lauren has both expanded her knowledge of family law, and actively pursued honing her advocacy and negotiation skills. Lauren puts 150% of her effort and enthusiasm into everything she does, and beneath her calm and friendly demeanor is a quiet intensity that should not be underestimated; though she’ll never let you see her sweat. Always quick with a joke and to find solutions even in the most seemingly hopeless situations; Lauren’s pragmatic yet optimistic outlook and great sense of humor make her a trusted advisor and puts her clients at ease.
Heather completed her articles with Kain & Ball from 2012 – 2013. After being called to the Ontario Bar in 2013, Heather returned to Kain & Ball as an associate and has been practicing with the firm exclusively in the area of family law ever since. She has broad range of experience with high conflict custody and access matters, as well as complex financial matters concerning child support, spousal support, and property issues.
Heather’s practice spans across the Greater Toronto Area and she has represented clients at the Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Justice, as well as in mediation and arbitration.
Heather is passionate about family law and is dedicated to providing her clients with the information and advice needed to successfully navigate through the Ontario family law system.
Outside of the office, Heather enjoys going on long walks with her husband and their beagle, Cora around her native Toronto and spends weekends at the cottage every chance she gets.
Jacob has worked exclusively in family law in his legal career, from when he first started with Kain & Ball as summer student following his second year of law school. He then completed his articles with Kain & Ball, and in 2015 was called to the Ontario bar. He has since represented clients in negotiating separation agreements and marriage contracts; throughout the court process including conferences, motions, and trials; and in mediations and arbitrations. He understands that one of a lawyer’s most integral roles is to be the voice of a client, so no matter where your family law issues take you, Jacob will advocate strenuously for what is truly important to you.
Jacob is familiar with and able to navigate the myriad of issues family law can present, and stresses open communication with clients to ensure that they are always aware and given the opportunity to make informed decisions about the steps being taken on their files. He is able to assist clients with any family law issues they may encounter, from the complex financial matters that can occur when dealing with property and support, to the difficult emotional issues that can arise when navigating child centered issues such as custody and access.
When Jacob is not practicing family law, he is doing his best not to reinjure himself while playing hockey, basketball, running, or some other sport he should have left behind after his twenties. He sometimes dabbles in more relaxing activities such as reading, poker, and chess.

Shannon has worked as a law clerk since 2009 and has been part of the Kain & Ball team since 2016. There is very little she enjoys more than family law, except for perhaps reminiscing about the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays, but we all know that those days are far behind us.
Besides family law, some of Shannon's interests include travel, anything true crime related and her Olde English Bulldog Mildred.
Prior to entering the legal profession Joanna received her Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto where she specialized in Psychology and majored in Crime and Deviance. Joanna’s undergraduate studies, which focused on learning about and understanding human behavior, and Joanna’s determination to help people is what drew her to Family Law. Separation and Divorce is an emotional and stressful process and will likely be one of the most difficult times in many peoples’ lives. However, Joanna’s natural ability to put clients at ease and immediately make them feel comfortable with her gives Joanna’s clients the reassurance and trust they need to know that they are in good hands and that they will get through this.
Joanna is sensitive to her client’s needs and will take the time to listen to their concerns and discuss all options. However, Joanna is also very candid with her clients and will tell a client the harsh truth when they need to hear it. In this regard, Joanna is honest and up front when managing her client’s expectations.
In all cases Joanna strives to find the best solution for her clients in the most cost-effective manner, whether that be by way of negotiation, litigation or mediation/arbitration. Although each case is different, Joanna considers litigation to be an option of last resort if there are less damaging and less costly alternatives to resolving a dispute.
Joanna helps her clients navigate through the separation and Divorce process step by step and strives to achieve the best outcome for the client with the least collateral damage to the parties and children involved. Joanna has successfully negotiated many settlements for her clients outside of Court. However, sometimes litigation simply cannot be avoided and when need be Joanna is not afraid to be aggressive and fight it out in Court and will strongly advocate for and behalf of her clients.
Joanna grew up in Mississauga and currently lives in Toronto with her husband and two children. In her spare time Joanna enjoys travelling, reading and volunteering at her children’s school. When Joanna is not practicing law you will most likely find her busy chasing after her two very active children.
